Most underrated SS in the league?

I think it's Ryan Theriot, nobody eve mentions this kid. While he doesn't have power or anything like that, out of SS's with 200+ AB this season (which should be every starting SS) he's #1 in BA at .317 (Christian Guzman #2 at .303), #1 in OBP at .390 (Hanley Ramirez #2 at .381), tied for 2nd in BB with 46 (Hanley #1 at 52) and he's #5 in H with 126 (#1 Reyes - 136, #2 Guzman 131, #3 Young - 128, #4 Hanley 127).

I understand that with guys like Rollins, Reyes and Ramirez it's easy to be overshadowed, but he doesn't get recognition from anyone.

  1. I think its Rickie Weeks He has been Hot as of late, Brewers not given him that much Credit.

  2. what about christian guzman. i know he was selected to the all-star game, but not by the fans or players. he was selected by clint hurdle. he's got speed, good BA. even though he plays for MLB's worst team i guess he's underrated, especially in a division that features rollins, ramirez and reyes.

  3. It's not really that he's overshadowed by other shortstops in the league. Look who his teammates are: Derrek Lee, Alfonso Soriano, Aramis Ramirez, Kosuke Fukudome(the media loves him), Carlos Zambrano, and everyone took a liking to Geovany Soto's rookie year too.

So I think it's more because he's overshadowed by all the superstars that are on the team with him. Theriot goes 3-4 with two doubles, but Lee and Ramirez combine to go 0-8 in the game with 3 K's, that's what they're going to talk about, not Theriot's good game. You can make the same case for Mark DeRosa, he's overshadowed by the superstars too and if it wasn't for him, this team would be in trouble.

  4. Jhonny Peralta

    66 runs (t-4), 29 doubles (t-1), 17 homers(2), 57rbi (2), .279ba (t-10th)

elite power numbers with an above average batting average. and he's a nobody.

EDIT: i guess even in this thread peralta is unheard of...

  5. If anything Young is over shadowed. The guys played with a broken finger for three weeks and jammed his ring finger on first base the other day and still is playing. Plus..in five years no one will remember he got the Sac Fly that one this years all star game for the AL. Him and Kinsler lead in DP's too. Does anyone know he played a big part in the ASG in Pittsburgh? Heck no they don't.

    edit: Thank you Anthony!

  6. Underrated for Career: Omar Vizquel- He is arguably the best shorstop all time (11 gold gloves) and besides this season, a good hitter too. Never complains and plays baseball the right way. A role model for others.

  7. Johny Peralta the guy is doing pretty dang good.

  8. i think he is underrated but i would have to say that the most underrated is JJ Hardy

he was a star last year until he got hurt and he is having a quietly great year for the Brewers  (which as a Cubs fan probably pains you)

Hardy's average is only 20 points lower than Theriot, and his OBP is 40 points lower, but he has 14 more HRs and 20 more RBIs in 40 fewer ABs..he also has a better SLG% and a ridiculous OPS of .844

so i think both of these guys are very underrated because of SS like reyes and ramirez, and both dont get the credit they really deserve

and while i agree that Young is great he is not underrated because he is the best SS in the AL, and people know that..when you say SS in the NL everyone thinks reyes and ramirez, not hardy and theriot

  9. i agree with Rangers fan. Micheal Young is an outstanding shortstop but no one notices it because he is in Texas. He has been playing better than Theriot for years. Don't get me wrong. Theriot is a very good player, Young is just better.

  10. You are right, Theriot is the most underrated. Most people will say Hanley Ramirez is the best short stop in the league because he has tons of power and speed maybe a 40-40 player which is hard to find. Theriot lacks power but hits for average, but since he's overshadowed by the whole Cubs lineup and the other shortstops in the league, he isn't talked about much.

  11. I would agree with Rangers fan and say Micheal Young

  12. I'll name a guy who's underrated for underrated,

    Jeff Keppinger.

His SLG% is very low, but in 267 at bats, he only struck out 10 times. That's unreal.

Royal's rookie Mike Aviles. He hasn't made a name for himself yet, but something tells me this guy will be a big part of the Royal's young core(Gordon, Butler, Grienke)

EDIT: tfoley. I don't know what Rickie Weeks you're watching. He plays 2nd, and he's awful.

  13. 1. Hanley Ramirez

    2. Guzman

    3. Theriot

  14. I agree with you man, Ryan Theriot is a table setter for this Cubs team and he keeps them up when Alfonso Soriano is injured...He is a hustle player that gives his all every day of every week and I think players like those should be recognized a lot more.

I think its sad that nobody noticed that Ryan Theriot had 2 hits (including a triple) a stolen base AND a run on Tuesdays game not to mention that stretch when he had 5 out of 6 multihit games during his 13 game hitting streak. OH YEAH, he is a good defensemen at shortstop when thats not even the position he started at (2nd base)

Yes I think he is the most underrated shortstop

PS. He leads the LEAGUE in multi-hit games

    pretty good eh?
