  1. He is the leader of the team he encourages the Bo Sox to do better = win more games so that is good genius!

  2. Not even close. This team is 10-15 games back without Mussina.

  3. Last time I checked each team sent 9 guys up to the plate to bat in a game(excluding pinch hitters). I would take a guy like

Varitek any day over 90% of major league catchers! Tek getting selected to the All-Star game shows just how valuable a member of the team he is- He was put on the team in a vote by major league managers, coaches and players, which shows his peers recognize his ability and contributions to the game. Plus the fact that in the last 6 years he has caught 4 no-hitters(most in major league history)!

By the way without Musina you guys would be chasing the Orioles and Blue Jays for last!

  4. My choice is Rivera with Mussina a close second. He's been as close to a sure thing as Yankee fans could have hoped for. That he's still been dazzling at this age is a testament to his greatness.

An argument could also be made for Giambi, who helped the offense stay up while the other bats were slumbering or injured. (See Damon and Matsui on the latter.) Everyone else has been OK to subpar. (See Jeter, Abreu and Cano slumping early.)

And if you're going to nominate Varitek, you might want to pass some "props" to Julio Lugo, too. As bad as Tek has been, Lugo's been pretty awful, too.

  5. Varitek will be playing a lot better than Posada the rest of the season, LMFAO!!!! You dumass!!!!

  6. mussina... they couldnt b where they r without him

  7. Giambi is having an unbelivable year him for now A-Rod in general and Jeter or Rivera in the playoffs

And no need to diss Varitek the mans called how many no hitters even thought posadas caught a perfect give the man props

  8. Jason Varitek isn't as much of an MVP for the Yankees as Mo Lewis (NY Jets) was for the '01 Patriots.  If anyone remembers, Mo was the one who knocked out Drew Bledsoe and forced the then-backup Brady in...

Anyway, I think their MVP has to be Alex Rodriguez.  If you analyze Mussina's stats, you'll notice that a lot of his wins were "lucky," which means he gets a lot of run support.  I read an article on Sportsline's Fantasy Baseball site the other day, I can't find the link for it, but basically explained that he lets a lot of baserunners on and can get away with it.  Considering all the injuries the Yankees have had this season (including A-Rod himself, Damon, Matusui, Posada) to their hitters, Rodriguez has been the most constant bat in their lineup.  I don't care that he isn't "clutch," the Yankees' offense wouldn't be where it is right now without him.  Even if he's not putting up the numbers himself, his presence in the lineup helps everyone else out, moreso than any other hitter they have.  I think Mariano Rivera is another solid choice for Yankees' MVP, just because he is still doing what he does best at his age.

EDIT - By the way, a catcher doesn't necessarily have to be a great hitter.  They do so much during a game anyway, like calling pitches, handling runners on base, and adjusting the defense, that catchers don't always focus on hitting.  This is why there are so few good hitting catchers in the league (maybe 5-6).  Look at a guy like Mike Matheny - he made a living off of defense and working really well with pitchers.  He had a career average of .239.

  9. There is no question that without Mike Mussina the Yankees would be in deep trouble.

  10. Kevin Brown for punching the wall in the 2004 season!

  11. I say Derek Jeter because he is the fuel of that team

  12. The Team

there has not really been a standout player for the Yanks

they just work together and win games

  13. he is an outstanding leader for the bosox. take him out of their line up and watch what happens to their pitching staff. he is a very smart player who just happens to lag in hitting.

the ynaks are a good team so far in the second half, but anything could happen.

and people need to get over him being an allstar. the other players voted him in so that says something.

  14. whoa,whoa,whoa,..Mike Mussina?...nope!!!??

    why!? he's been doing great!

    ..what about Giambi?

  15. The Yankees its Mussina if it was not for the guy the Yankees would be under .500

  16. Mike Mussina ofcourse he is doing something that nobody thought would happen. He is 13-6 and is only July. He may end up the season with 20 wins if he keeps this up.

Also it can be Mariano Rivera because he is 25/25 in save oppertunities. With an ERA of 1.21

  17. George Steinbrenner. For paying 100 billion dollars on free agents to make an unfair playing field for all of the MLB.

  18. Mussina has revived his career when it looked like he was done!!

  19. The funny thing is that Jason Varitek was selected to the All-Star game by the players. But who cares, the ironic thing was that JD Drew won the MVP Award while at Yankee Stadium. The Red Sox offense is good enough to not have to worry about players who aren't great offensively. ie. Julio Lugo and your boy V-Tek. I am going to enjoy kicking your asses this weekend at Fenway Park. Oh and Jason Varitek is just as valuable to you guys and Mariano Rivera is to us. ie. 2004 ALCS. aka the Biggest Choke in history.

    Go Red Sox!

  20. Mussina. He's the best pitcher in the A.L. at 13-5.

But if Varitek wants to help...let him!

    GO YANKS!
