  1. I would say Bogota, Caracas and also Sao Paulo in Brazil.

Bigger countries, bigger cities, bigger numbers....

  2. Puerto Principe, Haiti

  3. I would say Venezuela, because Chavez uses all the oil riches for his armies and let the poor grow bigger in size. So the crime grows larger. He gives them a tiny bit of free food and medical so they will like him and vote for him. While he really wants to keep them poor. Very much more crime there.

  4. Most violent country would be Colombia. They ranked number #1 in the world in murders followed by South Africa and Jamaica.

The most violent city in Latin America would probably have to be either Port-au-Prince, Haiti or Cartagena, Colombia.  Haiti has always been politically unstable and there have been kidnappings, murders, rapes, etc, even with the UN Peacekeeping forces there. Cartagena is a big drug cartel city, so crossing the wrong path can end be dangerous.

  5. COLOMBIA

  6. It would either be venezuela or colombia, both are ranked as the top most  violent countries.

As far as violent city goes, the guy on top of me has no idea what he's talking about, Cartagena is one of the safest cities in colombia and has ALWAYS been one of the safest cities in colombia. He might have been thinking of Cali or Medellin which have very violent past due to the cartels. Both cities are doing much better now than they used to, cali still has a bit of a violent crime problem though.

As far as most violent city goes, I'd say either caracas, cali or sao paulo, brazil.

  7. in terms of violent crime per se, it would be sao paolo, brasil.  the police corruption is very bad, and violence in many of the poor barrios is extreme.

in terms of overall crime, mexico is #1.  the most unsafe country for a gringo (U.S.) is certainly colombia where they love to mug and kidnap rich foreigners.

haiti is definitely the most dangerous country in the caribbean, but i don't think it falls under "latin america"

  8. The stats above for Colmbia and Venezuela are from 1998, before Chavez and Uribe.  Chavez has boosted the murder rate to 43 per 100,000 by 2005 and Colombia dropped to 40.  Kidnappings have virtualy disappeared in Colmbia except for some politically motivated ones by rebels.  Venezuela TODAY is far worse than Colombia.  In fact, Colombia will soon (in a few years) be safer than Ecuador, Brazil, Bolivia and Peru, I bet.

Anyone that says Sao Paulo has never been there.  #1 Everyone knows Rio alone is much worse right now as is Salvador, Recife, Fortaleza and Natal.  ANy City in Colombia or Venezuela is worse.  Quito and Guayaquil are worse.  Ciudad del Este is worse.  There may be others, as well.  I lived a year in Sao Paulo and go back 3-4 times a year now and have never even seen so much as a purse snatcher.
