Canadian Governor Generals are the Queen's representative in Canada and by custom are virtually powerless. They officiate at civic functions, hold receptions for visiting dignitaries who are not quite important enough to get the Prime Minister's attention etc. etc. All this means that even the classy ones -- and many have been are largely forgotten by Canadians a few years after they move from Rideau Hall (the official residence). The result is that it tends to be the incumbent (right now Michaëlle Jean) and the immediate predecessor that anyone at all can name in some important context like an after dinner trivia game.

So the first poster is probably right, Michaëlle hasn't been around long enough to be too familiar and Adrienne Clarkson was an English CBC journalist for years so nationally familiar. But wait a few years and she too will be remembered only by some high school in the middle of nowhere that's named for her. How many now remember the classy gentlemen, Vincent Massey or Georges Vanier or the charming and talented Madame Jeanne Sauve?
