Question:

Mother Cat Not Producing Enough Milk?

This is my cat's second litter. Her first litter was 4 kittens and this time it's only 3. She had a lot of milk the first time. But this time it seems as if she barely has any at all. The kittens aren't crying and seem to be okay but I'm still worried she may not be producing enough. Should I worry about this? If so what can I do to help her increase milk production (already have her eating kitten food.

  1. I think your mama cat is fine.  She may not have as many physical changes with her second time, so she looks less full.  If the kittens are gaining weight, then it's fine!  Don't worry, just enjoy them.

  2. I am curious why you think there isnt enough milk if the kittens are fine.

Nature has a way of making sure there is enough, by the sucking action of the kittens. There is plenty for their needs, dont worry!

  3. if you really are concerned she's not producing you could wait and see if one of the kittens crys at her teat (or fusses around with several like it can't find any milk)  try to feed the kittens milk replacement right then (NEVER COWS MILK) and see if they still seem really hungry.

Tuna is also a nice treat for new mom, so rich and fatty. I give my nursing mom one of those mini cans of tuna once or twice a week. But watch out, it can make her a little gassy!

  4. Your mother cat needs plenty of healthy food.  Talk to your vet to find out what your cat needs to eat to produce milk for the young.

  5. Make sure you are feeding her a very good nourishing food. (Kitten food like you said) Nature should take care of the rest.
