My spouse and I are in the process of adoption. I have had 4 children, but due to a hysterectomy, I can no longer have any more....so, if anyone is going thru the process also, can you tell me the minimum and maxium time for the complete process? We're not in a hurry...I was just curious. We are going thru our local DSS office. I am adopted also, so this is very exciting for me to see the other side of adoption.

  1. more power to you mom!!!  i think adoption is wonderful, and we are planning at the begining of the year to also apply< i can have children, and have one> http://soulofadoption.com/  sign up for this web site and they are families like you who want to adopt, are in teh middle of an adoption, and have finished!

  2. Sunspot apparently is confused about the difference between a hysterectomy and a tubal ligation.

Anyhow, what has your local DSS office told you concerning your wait?  There are so many factors that affect the wait such as a willingness to accept a child of a different race than your own and accepting those with certain levels of special needs.

I wish you the best.  I hope your wait is short and sweet!

  3. A process of about 2 months. They should tell you. You can even ask them in a formal question!

  4. I think the fastet it has been done was about 6 months.  But usually you are looking at at least a year.

To speed the process up start gathering everything you will need.  Professional references from people that work with/deal with your children, soccor coach, band leader, homeschool group leader... And some friends that are willing to be a reference,  Also everyone in the home will have to have an updated physical, within the last year, but might be last 6 months.  Have everyone's birth certs and social sec cards handy, and be ready to show that you can pay your bills on time and that you can handle more children.  Be prepared to know where they are going to sleep and get the kids prepped to answer questions.  :)

  5. Not to be obnoxious or anything, but why did you get a hysterectomy if you want more kids?

Anyway, I think it's great that you're choosing to adopt; there are so many great kids in orphanages looking for a great home.

The minimum/maximum time for completing the process sounds like something your local DSS office should be able to tell you. Couldn't you ask your adoptive parents how long it took them to adopt you?

  6. Usually, the process can take anywhere from one month to a year. Yes. It all depends. I'll need more details, but probably 2 months...my guess :)

  7. If you are going through your local DSS office, they will be able to tell you all the details.  You will have to go through classes, orientation, etc.  But what about the already approved people who have no children?  You will be removing one more possibility from their dreams.  If you are adopting a special needs infant or older child, whose parent pool is smaller, then your experience as a parent would be  very valuable.  Just a thought.  Expect to wait years unless you fost/adopt.  And then as always with the state, plan on risking your heart (You never know what's going to happen with the case before adoption is possible).  Good luck to you..

  8. Congratulations!  The time varies based on the type of adoption, with foster-to-adopt being the fastest.  Since you're going through the state, I assume that's what you're doing.  Before you can do much else, you need to get a homestudy.  Once you're approved, the DSS will start calling you about potential children as they enter the system.  The amount of time it takes for the adoption to be finalized varies, but the child will live with you throughout the process.
