Question:

Motherboard installation...?

Right, so Ive just done my first build, and when I plug the PSU to the wall theres nothing. The motherboard has no lights, the switch wont work, no fans. Now in my stupidity it seems I screwed the motherboard directly to the case, without the brass standoffs...d**n I wish it came with a book...So now i've changed it so the brass standoffs are in, still nothing. Could I have shorted my mobo? If so would there be no lights fans?

  1. I am presuming that you have connected the leads from the front panel to the motherbord ( On off switch ). Make sure the ram is secure. Check that the fan speed monitor cable is connected. Is there a power switch on the power supply. Dont laugh I replaced one yesterday and didnt turn the power supply on at the back.Is the plug fuse ok, if it has one. Some will not start if the drive is not connected correctly.Apart from that I cant think of anything else.

  2. If you screwed the motherboard directly to the board there is a great chance that the motherboard is damaged.

  3. You might have a bad PSU, or a bad motherboard or connected the power switch wire in the incorrect pins. Those are the three things you'll need to check. The Q6600 is a nice CPU; I'm running it overclocked and stable at 3.2GHz and it's the older B3 stepping. Looks like you have a nice setup with the exception of the RAM - or the lack thereof. I suggest using a 64bit OS and more RAM. I'm using 8GB DDR2 800MHz.

  4. did you felt any smell the first time you connected. if no then it might be a minor loss not a major one. check the atx power supply back fan if it starts or not. you might have lost your power supply due to the shortage in motherboard. be optimistic man. and keep fingers crossed. hope for the best

  6. Now that you have the board correctly fitted to the case, check the following:

1, Is the power lead connected to the motherboard

2, is the on/off switch connected, this is often where the trouble lies, the case switch needs to be connected to the board.

3, Is the CPU in correctly

4, Is the ram correct and fitted properly

5, Are there any links to set the speed and voltage for the CPU, if so make make sure these are correct.

6, Is the video card seated properly?

7, Is the cable to the hard drive or CD rom the right way round - yes you can get these upside down.

It is possible that you damaged the unit by shorting out the motherboard.

I have managed to short a motherboard out and have it come back to life after I removed the short and re-applied the power.

  7. You have almost certainly blown the board. ALL motherboards should come with an installation manual.

  9. You've got your case wires hooked in the wrong way to the pwr terminals. reverse pwr and reset.  All you want at the minute is to boot up so double check your pwr terminals.  Once you get power on and boot then shut down and work by deduction.

  10. Did you check the fuse on the power supply plug? if you mounted the mobo with out the spacers it may have shorted out and blown the fuse

  11. Make sure that your power switch wires inside your case is plugged propperly on the board or even plugging in the wrong pin won't start your pc. Secondly check your ram matches your mobo, thirdly check  your 2x2 cable from the power supply is conected.

  12. if you did fix the mobo direct to the casing then it will not work due to the back of the board shorting on the case.

stand offs must be used to give clearance.

remove and refit with stand offs.

    hopefully it will fire up

  13. usually the power supply will trip before that happens, if thats it, just unplug the power supply for a bit, plug it back in and try again.  Also, I've done this before, check the power supply for a toggle on/off switch on the actual PSU, they ship with them turned off. Its right next to where the power cable plugs in on that one.
