Mothers of multiples, help please!

I am bored to tears with my 14 month old twins. I'm also pregnant and my lower back has been really really sore lately so I want to avoid carrying as much as I can... stooping is hard, bending over is hard...

but I want to do things with them. I am so limited as to what I can do, though. It's been raining for over a week straight, although we had a respite over the weekend so that was nice.

Anyhow, what did you do with your twins when they were 14 months old? There isn't any mall to bring them to near me. The park could be Ok if it wasn't raining except that they're both very mobile and they run in opposite directions. They hate sitting in a stroller.

I am just beside myself with boredom!

I can't take them out in my own yard because #1) the rain and #2) the bugs are TERRIBLE where I live and my husband hasn't cut the grass in about a month and we have a tick situation in the yard. I pulled a tick off myself last week just from walking in the yard. I can't cut the grass because I have to be inside to supervise my twins.

I imagine taking one toddler to a park is a piece of cake because it's easy to chase one kid. What do you do with two!?

  1. Ask friends that have children to have a play date with them.  Even if they are not twins.  My kids like to play with kids of all ages.  Bubbles might be something to entertain them.  You could do coloring at the table, and play dough as long as you watch them closely.  Or make peanut butter play dough and it wouldn't matter if they ate it. Help them paint with water colors.  Put colored sand (sold at Wal-mart in the outdoor sand) the kind  of storage container that goes under your bed. So it would be low enough for them and it would also be long enough for both of them to play.  You could give them items around the house to play with in the sand. Spoons, bowls, paper plate, butter dishes etc.  They would have a blast and your back could have a chance to feel better.  You could do almost all of these at the table or coffee table.  Good luck!!

  2. How do you feel about messes?

If you have a basement, garage, playroom or if you don't care about getting the kitchen floor dirty, how about doing some art. Lay down some newspaper and some big canvas or sheets of baby. Give the girls some non-toxic paint and let them go to town with their hands. It's messy, but it can keep them entertained for hours. The bonus is that you have some great pieces of art to give away to the grandparents.

You could also try doing a water station. Fill shallow plastic totes with water. Grab lots of kitchen utensils and water proof toys and dress the girls in their bathing suits or diapers. Let them run around and splash each other. This really only works in a garage, basement or large bathroom....but it is great fun on a hot day.

You could also try "cooking" with them. Make playdough or cookies and have them help you. At 14 months they can probably understand simple instructions. If not...just give them some homemade play dough and let them go to town on the kitchen floor. If you make it with just flour, water, food coloring and salt it is perfectly fine if they decide they want to taste it.

Sorry I can't think of any clean fun!!!

  3. How about the library? Sometimes they have storytelling and singalongs. Do you have a local rec centre? Sometime they have playgroups with mats set up and the kids can just crawl around and play on the equipment.

It must be hard with twins...congrats on just staying sane!! I am struggling with just one!

  4. do you have any play centers near? take them to a local mall and stroll them around....it'll give you a chance to have some fun too....any friends with children? take a visit to their house for an hour or two....good luck !

    :)
