Motherwell threaten Cardiff over debt
Scottish Premier League outfit Motherwell today issued the threat of legal action to Cardiff City over money owed to them on the transfer of right-back Paul Quinn.
English Football League Championship side Cardiff were due to pay £100,000 in January and £75,000 over the summer to The Steelmen, but neither payment has been forthcoming. However, the Welsh club have been able to bring in six new players over the summer, including Wales international captain Craig Bellamy from Manchester City on loan – a deal which has reportedly made Motherwell chairman John Boyle livid.
At the end of last week, the Fir Park club issued a writ against Cardiff in court, but said that the Bluebirds did not attend or submit a defence against the claim.
'Given every chance'
Motherwell chief executive Leann Dempster said in a statement today that Cardiff were given "every chance to do the right thing" but that the board believe "Cardiff's position is untenable given their activity in the transfer market".
The statement added that: "Given all these circumstances and with legal and moral weight behind us, Motherwell FC have no option but to immediately pursue all legal routes to ensure this significant sum paid to us as quickly as possible. These may include issuing a winding-up order, arresting assets or physically sending bailiffs to their ground on match day to take possession of cash. Every option will be fully considered and implemented as soon as possible."
'Matter to be resolved this week'
At the press conference where Bellamy was unveiled, Cardiff chief executive Gethin Jenkins was asked about the situation and said that the matter would be resolved by the end of the week. "Our lawyers have been in communication with them and it will be resolved within the next seven days. But I should stress these are loans and any signings we've done so far have been (free transfers)."
Quinn had moved to Cardiff in July 2009 after Motherwell accepted an offer of around £300,000 for the 25-year-old. An initial installment was paid up front, but the full payment has yet to be made. The player played 27 times for his new club last season.
