Question:

Motion Control Shoes Question?

I am 16 years old and have begun training for a half marathon. I am not heavy but I have very flat feet and overpronate. Most articles say that if you have flat feet you need motion control shoes to fix the overpronation but I tried some on and the high arch is very uncomfortable.

So is it better to overpronate with comfortable shoes or correct the problem with uncomfortable motion control shoes?

  1. Go to a local running store (not one of the big chains like SportMart or d**k's) and they can get you fitted into the right shoe.  Wear (or bring) an old pair of shoes that have wear on the soles, and they will look at that and probably watch you walk to see what you should be wearing.

Just because you have flat feet doesn't mean you overpronate.  My arches are pretty low, and I wear cushioning shoes.

Overall - make sure you are comfortable in the shoes...if they don't feel good, you won't wear them.  And remember, you shouldn't have to "break in" a good pair of running shoes...they should be ready to go right out of the box.

Good luck on your training!!  That is a big goal for a 16 year old!
