Motion chooses the same road to the Kentucky Derby as last year, but this time with Went The Day Well
Team Valor International is real good at recognizing talent early when they get the chance, and surprise the American racing circuit every now and then with their brilliant juvenile’s and sophomore’s, but what’s more exciting is that they pick them up for Europe or the U.K and bring them here just to put them on the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby trail, which just makes people so much skeptical about the outcome of the race since they have their local favourites and then there are those, who are under raced, less seen of and most importantly under the banner of Team Valor International and precise training of Graham Motion, who by the way won the last year’s Kentucky Derby with the 3-year-old of the year, 2011, Animal Kingdom.
This time around it’s a different proposition though the dynamics are the same on a Kentucky Derby trail on which there is some serious talent waiting for 5 May, Graham Motion will be sending out, Went The Day Well, who was picked up Team Valor International president, Barry Irwin after the colt finished two close second in England.
Brought to America, the son of Proud Citizen, out of mare Tiz Maies Day by Tiznow, Went The Day Well turned in his first maiden for Graham Motion at Gulfstream Park’s dirt course on 4 February, 2012, where he was caught in a slow pace, but did well to close in and finish fourth.
He was then tried again, at his second attempt he did not disappoint, as he was slightly cut back in distance to 1 1/16 miles over the same venue on 3 March, 2012. He learned from his mistake and this time stayed closer to the pace and finished first by a margin of 1 ¼ lengths.
Graham Motion will do what he did last year, and try to get Went The Day Well follow in Animal Kingdom’s footprints and use the Grade 2 Vinery Racing Spiral Stakes as the springboard to the Kentucky Derby.
The race is scheduled on 24 March, 2012, at Turfway Park, over a distance of 1 1/8 miles on synthetic surface, as Went The Day Well will go against the likes of Russian Greek, Handsome Mike, Mr. Prankster, Ill Conceived.
