Question:

Motion detector lights won't stay on.?

I recently replaced the bulbs and in the test position they work fine. I have them set for dusk to dawn. When I flip the switch they stay on for about three seconds then go off. I thought maybe they were like some other motion lights and I tried flipping the switch three other times, two other times, etc.. Nothing is working. Any suggestions?

  1. Buy a new one, those things are notorious for that, especially the cheap ones.

  2. Most motion detectors have 3- settings  1- test/on   2.- sensitivity  3. duration.  Try setting on sensitivity to medium   3.  duration- 5-10 min.  If that still doesn't work...I guess is better just buy a new one.  $25-40.  for a descent one.

  3. should be another small 3 position setting switch under sensor or on back of unit

  4. The whole point of a motion detector light is for it to come on when and for however long it senses motion, then to go off.   It would be pointless to have one installed somewhere and try to get it to stay on from dusk to dawn.  That's a whole different kind of light, called a night light.   Motion sensor lights only work from dusk to dawn anyway.

  5. I think they're supposed to go on when you flip the switch to the ON position, but if you flip it ON - OFF - ON, they go into motion-detection mode.

Try blocking the dusk/dawn light sensor with some black tape - that should make them go on when you flip the switch ON and leave it in that position.   If they don't go on, there might be something wrong with the controller.
