Question:

Motion sickness from reading in the car?

I feel sick whenever I try to read in the car. But I've got a 5 hour ride coming up in a few days and I can easily kill the time with a book..if I didn't get terrible headaches and feel dizzy whenever I try to read a book in the car. I can't even text for very long :(

I never feel sick on planes, trains, or roller coasters or anything..just in the car. What can I do to stop it?

  1. I have the same problem and haven't found anything to cure it - tried motion sickness pills, plaster, sleeping a lot before leaving, eating healthy...

I find that if you eat and sleep well it helps with the motion sickness but as soon as I start to read I'll get that sickness feeling.

  2. I don't know how to cure it, I don't think there is a way.  This occurs, however, because you're focused on a fixed point (your book), but your body senses your movement.

  3. Don't read, sit in the front seat, have a nap.

  4. Motion sickness is caused by a conflict between your inner ear sensing motion but your eyes not seeing motion. Things like reading books, where you're not looking at motion will cause you to get motion sickness. The best thing to do is simply look at the scenery around you as it goes by. This will eliminate the conflict and will keep you well.
