Moto GP 2010: Jorge Lorenzo enjoying some of the best races of his career on his FIAT Yamaha Bike
The MotoGP Season 2010 has reached its halfway mark, while the drivers are enjoying a break for the moment. The major story of this season is, without a doubt, Jorge Lorenzo. The Spaniard has had a tremendous season so far, on his FIAT Yamaha bike, free from any kinds of flaws and mistakes.
As Valetino Rossi started his title defence, this season, it was apparent that the biggest challenge would come form none other than his own teammate, Jorge Lorenzo. The Spaniard had a great season in 2009, where he had his moments to go past Rossi, but he made mistakes under pressure. This time, however, the things had to be different, as the Spaniard had more experience and more exposure than before.
The Season so far has been great, as the Spaniard has won six races, while finishing runners up in the remaining three races. Out of a possible 225 points, the Spaniard has dropped only 15 points, enjoying the lead at the top of MotoGP table with 210 points. In addition, he has enjoyed quite a few weekends of total domination, as he managed to get five pole positions as well. Nothing can be better than this, as Lorenzo still has not been away from podium this season.
The Season started at Qatar, while Lorenzo entered the race carrying a pre-season injury, which occurred during one of his test rides. However, he was good enough as he finished in second place, behind Valentino Rossi. In the second race, at Jerez, Lorenzo had one of his best races, in his career, as he made-up huge distance to overtake his fellow countryman Dani Pedrosa, to get a victory in his home grand prix. The third race was at Le Mans, while Lorenzo managed to get another victory there. At that point, he was well ahead of his closest rival, Rossi, who finished third and second in these GPs, respectively.
However, Lorenzo’s season got easier and simpler before the fourth race at Mugello. As no other riders seem to challenge FIAT Yamaha’s authority, the only challenger Rossi crashed and broke his leg. After this horrible incident, Lorenzo went into the race but finished behind Dani Pedrosa, in second place. After this, Lorenzo had three consecutive wins at Silverstone, Assen and Catalunya. In the eighth race, at Sachsenring, Lorenzo was again in a calm mood, as he finished second behind Pedrosa, again. However, a victory at Laguna Seca put an end to the first half of Lorenzo’s amazing season.
There are many things different about Lorenzo from the last season. This time he is mentally and physically stronger than before. Last year, he used to crash or go off the track from leading positions, when Rossi used to build a little extra pressure. This time, however, he is ready to engulf any kind of pressure, as he has learned his limitations. In addition, in MotoGP there are seldom any races where one gets a free ride to the chequered flag. Therefore, Lorenzo had to work hard for his victories, while he managed to shun all kinds of challenges. This year, the Spaniard seems to have a better understanding of his races and race-tracks. This knowledge is helpful, as it tells you the right moments and corners to overtake other riders.
Right now, Lorenzo is on top of the table with 210 points. His initial rival, Rossi, is in fifth places, as he missed four races after the injury. His closest rival is Dani Pedrosa, but Lorenzo has a healthy lead of 72 points over his fellow Spaniard. Andrea Dovizioso is in third spot with a difference of 95 points. The Spaniard is flying high at the moment, especially after a flawless first half of the season. There is no doubt that his confidence is high, which would take him through the next half smoothly. Right now, there seems to be nothing coming in the way of Lorenzo’s first championships in Premium Class.
