  1. A 2005 would be fine.  Here is the deal with race bikes,  If they are ridden often  (and you can tell by looking for were makes on the frame and engine.  Scatchs and such.)  they are shot after 10 years.  The suspension is whooped and internal metal parts are worn out.(rods and trans)  Never buy a  ten year old mx unless you know it has hardly ever been ridden.  It should look showroom stock.  If you find a bike like that and the money is right buy it and have fun.  Racing at a local level is about the ability of the rider not the bike.  People might laught but you can  compete.  In fact if you are serious buy a bike that is 3-4 yaers old take the money you save replace the rings and clutch plates,  and put the rest into a pro suspension job and have a bike better then new for under 4000g.

A pro suspenion job is the best money you can spend on a bike.

  2. Some people will tell you that a bike that old is fine and from some of the posts I see that the American people put I believe that a lot of older bikes must still be used to race with, but where I am from you would never try to race a bike that old as you would (even at a beginner level) be completely outclassed.  I also think that buying a bike that old, you risk buying trouble and I would not want to be out jumping a 1990 mx bike unless I knew it had been completely worked on by someone who could fix any problems that it had.  Things like suspension have improved so much since the 1990's the bikes that are used today are just way more advanced.

    Just my opinion
