Question:

Motocross in Boston area?

Hey all,

I actually have a couple of questions... I've been wanting to get involved with motocross for a while, but don't really know where to start. I'm 21... do you think that's too old to learn?

What's the best way to get started... lessons? Just getting out there?

Also, any bike recommendations for a beginner/5'9"/120? Good stores/places to practice around Boston?

Ha, sorry if that's a lot. Any advice would be awesome.

Thanks

  1. Google NESC and NEMX, they are two sanctioning bodies in New England.

Choice of bike depends on your level of experience. If you have never ridden before you need to start with a full size mini like a kx85 or crf 150. If you are a new rider the lesson idea would be very good. Good riders don't learn to ride at the races, they learn to ride by practicing and then later learn to race at the races. There are many riding schools including conducted by former riders such as Gary Bailey, Rick Johnson, Marty Smith, Tony DiSteffano, etc Some do travel so try googling them. I am sure there are also local riding schools in your area.

  2. Ted Kennedy allows dirt bikes to practice in his yard at Martha's Vineyard.

  3. Go along to your local club and talk to some of the people on the committee there.  They will be able to tell you how to join up and give you advise on what bike would be best for you.  I would suggest perhaps a kx125cc or yz125cc or a equivalent 250cc.  I don't know what classes there are where you are but would think that age you are that you wouldnt be able to go on a smaller bike, but the locals will know about that.  Also for your height a smaller bike would be too small.

If you don't know where the local tracks are just google the information as it is easy to find where tracks are.  By talking to the locals you will also get an idea of the people you will be around by joining up.

You may also need to do some form of training as I know where i live even Seniors have to have a certain amount of training if they have never raced before.  But again check with the locals as that may not apply to where you are.

    Have fun
