Question:

Motocross questions - bike size, class, racing?

I've been riding dirtbikes for years now, but have never raced.

I've ridden on a track that belongs to a friend of mine, who is an ex-rider, and I really like the experience and want to seriously get into the motocross racing scene.

I'm about 125lbs, 5'8", and turning 17 this summer.

My questions are:

What type of bike should I get? I'm thinkin a 125cc two-stroke because a 250 four stroke would be quite heavy for a light guy like me... but I'm FAR from an expert which is why I'm here.

I live in Toronto, Ontario (whether thats of relevance or not) and if I were to get the above mentioned bike, what class would I race in? is there a novice for people around my age or something?

Also, this has probably been done to death, but how can I get involved into Motocross racing, websites? organization?

  1. I would go for a 4 stroke 250cc as at 17 you should be able to handle one of those even at a beginner level.  The 2 stroke 125cc usually have to compete against the 250cc 4 strokes and they don't have the same power that the 4 strokes do so are at a disadvantage.

Go along to a few shops and have a sit on bikes to see what feels right and as far as getting involved join the ama and join a local club.  Once you take the first step the rest just follows along and doing club races you find out what all the other riders are doing and what things they are involved in.

As I am not an american I will leave it up to the american guys to advise what class you should race in but there is always novice classes at club level as people with all levels of ability race regularly.

  2. i dont know what she talking bout but i have a 04kx125 and i have road many 250 4 strokes and they cant even compare. when i am racing i can get the holeshot so much easier than the 4 strokes. i would suggest that you get a 125 2stroke. the brands id get would be kawasaki or suzuki. but thats just my opinion.

just go out to your local track and talk to the guy that runs the races and he will be able to tell you what class to race in.
