My brother is getting a dirt bike. He is 5 foot 6 inches and weighs 160 pounds. We are looking at purchasing this dirt bike:

First off, I was wondering if 100cc is powerful for a dirt bike. We are planning on using it at our cabin in Montana. We will be taking it on back country dirt roads and up steep hills. Will this be adequate? How fast will a bike like this go? Does it suit my brothers size?

  1. That bike will leave him longing for more. It will go maybe 50-60 on flat ground, but in the hills it will be underpowered and a handfull on the steep parts, there is no worse feeling then having a bike stall due to not enough power while you are climbing a hill.

I weigh just about the same as your bro and i ride a honda XR200R, it is ok, but it feels underpowered sometimes.

He should look at a 150CC-250CC if he wants to trail ride it.

  2. After you get the performance questions resolved, do you know what brand the bike is and where you can get parts for it, if it breaks?

    Look before you leap.

  3. i'm 5'4'' and ride a 200cc (just started) i already want more power...

i'd highly suggest NOT getting that bike.... wait around for something bigger within your price range if you have to... you will NOT be happy with that bike for long.... a few days at most...

and depending on the steepness and height of these hills, he may not even make it half way up the first one... couldn't really lean over the handlebars because then the tire wouldn't dig enough becuase of the size of the bike... to compensate he'd have to center most of his weight over the rear tire and that's a disaster waiting to happen.

  4. Try hard to find a Honda CT-90 or CT-110. These bikes were made for rough country and although small engined, their gearing (dual speed low/high) makes them just super.

Another REAL climber is a ROKON - mountain goat quality machine. For a dual sport the Yamaha TW200 or TW225 are perhaps the simplest out there. Kawasaki makes a wonderful Super Sherpa 250, but they can be pricey. Good Luck and Be Careful out there!

  5. looks clean... 100cc is a fairly powerful bike for sombody under 200 pounds... but if u r'nt going to be doing serious jumps than a 100 is a perfect trail bike...

  6. He is not that big, but a 125cc would be better, and if he is strong, and sensible a 250cc can be really fun.

  7. get a CRF150 or CRF230 or a CR85 much faster then that plus you have hills

  8. He is going to have a hard time getting that thing to go up hills at a decent speed. Im 5'10 at 150 and I was on a 200cc for a while. It was good to learn on, but it was super slow (could not keep up with all the 250s i was riding with) and lazy up hills and I grew bored of it really fast. I would stick him on a 4 stroke for sure. If he is young and going to grow I'd go right for the 250. There are governers and pins you can put on to make it go slower and have less power, these can be removed as his riding capability gets better. In the long run, I think you should pay the money to get a bigger bike now.

  9. noooooooo......my 230 will make it up some pretty steep ones....those are for like begginer easy trails
