  1. Make sure the Switch you replaced is identical to the one you took out,

I don't have a diagram but if you were to ask an O.M.C. (Johnson Evinrude) shop they may still have a manual kicking around to compare your wiring.

I have only seen this condition once before and the problem lay in the wiring harness plug in the engine it's self a probe was bent over and did not connect properly. This is what's called an open ground system which means that if you disconnect the wiring harness and were to start it with a rope it would run and to shut it down the circuit is closed which in turn grounds out the ignition coils. So check your switch and harness plug you must also have the correct switch or it won't work.   Good luck.

  2. If it's a battery type ignition, the ignition switch connects the coil to 12 volts + when you turn it on.  If it's a magneto type, the switch grounds out when you turn it off.  Invest in a manual.

  3. need a new ignition switch

for the wiring diagram i read on a site you can go to your library and they might have some thing you can photocopy

  4. Check all connections to see that nothing has come loose.

Hope your remote control with ignition matches your engine.
