my wife and i are planning on doing a tour of banff & jasper this october... can someone recommend good & affordable riding gear (jackets/pants etc) ($600 ish total for everything). it will likely be quite cold. i would like armor in the gear, but it doesn't need to be leather. we could also wear warm clothes underneath.

thanks much

  1. New Enough.  It's a company in Texas they sell new products, new line of products and CLOSEOUTS, some small subset on clearance.  When you get on their choose CLOSEOUTS naturally, and look at the comments on sizes and such. Motorcycles jackets depend on a tight fit to make the armor fit the right spots and stay there. So PAY ATTENTION, measure actual sizes, most sleeves will be set so that the sleeves of the jacket extend out to virtual handle bars, the collars will generally have no flapping points. So when you try them on sit in your riding position. Legs in pants are a scosh longer so your pants don't pull up over your boot tops.

You might look for Yellow and black for colors, it seems our eyes developed over centuries a sensitivity to bright yellow and dead black. I can't imagine why, but tell me, have you ever eaten a bee at 80mph?

I'd get  Euro 2 armor, its not all that much more and it seems to be a bit more comfortable.

  2. I think you have seriously underestimated this mode of transportation.  I would highly recommend reconsidering this, or get HEATED clothing.

If you are seriously considering this endeavor, you will need to have short spurts of travel to NOT end up frostbit and in severe hypothermia.

I love riding, but after being in Alaska last August, and buying heavy jackets there and using several layers of clothing in August, I can't imagine October.
