Hi guys, hopefully like me you're a motorbike enthusiast and will know a little about what happens if water gets into the petrol tank and rust grows.

Last night, i was riding along a country road when my bike started to jump forward and splutter like it was out of petrol only i had a full tank. i called the AA and the guy just drained some of the petrol out of the tank and some rust deposit came out as well; could this have been what caused it to break down? does anyone have any info or websites to recommend so i could learn more about it.

Any help would be appreciated.

  1. What are you storing your fuel in?  Or where are you purchasing it from?  As it sounds like the fuel was already dirty and may have gotten into your tank simply by the container you used not being clean.  It's important to purchase fuel that is clean and then store it in a good container.  Fuel shouldnt be keep for a long period or it does go stale.  Most of the guys I know who race only get and mix their fuel just before they race so it is fresh.

  2. This question would be better off in the Motorcycle section under Transport.

The current thread is for Motorcycle Racing.

You will get many more answers in the correct forum.

    Many thanks.

  3. sounds like you'll need to seal the tank to get rid of the rust.

KBS Coatings makes the best kits to fix rusted tanks.
