Question:

Motorbike test advice?

I'm taking my Motorbike licence next month, but haven't ridden a bike with gears in over 5 years. I had taken and passed my CBT over fours years ago but I was only riding a scooter back then.

I have spoken to a couple of bike test centres and they have told me I will be fine, however, I am thinking about just taking my CBT and theory test and buying a 125cc Aprilla for a year to get good bike experience, then take my full licence next year?

What advice could you give me?

Ideally I would like to pass my full licence and get a Yamaha R6, but I think that isn't a wise choice considering how fast they are :)

Cheers

  1. If you are not taking the full test I do not see why you are bothering with the theory test; which is only valid for two years and with the test changing on the practical side from October I would wait until you are ready for all the test before taking any part of the test,

The 125 sounds like a good idea and I agree wait until you pass before looking at a bigger bike and an R6 in the hands of a beginner would not be a wise choice, maybe a bandit or Hornet might be better,

  2. I think you would be fine. The gears on a bike aren't too bad and it is not hard to master the controls. Things like road safety are much more important and harder to learn.

Things like the manoeuvres for the test may be tricky though so you could get away with taking a few lessons and then sitting the test.

By the way, unless you pass the direct access test, you will be restricted to a bike with power less than 33bhp for 2 years after you pass. You could get a Yamaha R6 and restrict it.

  3. It's just like riding a bike.

  4. take the full test. its not as hard as you think. and an r6 is a nice bike but if youre buying it new id suggest going bigger. youll regret it if you dont

  5. A day or two of practice should be enough to become proficient controlling a motorcycle.  If you feel you need a year to become a good rider, maybe you need to get a car or use the bus instead. Nobody who has potential at all needs a year to learn to control something as simple as a motorcycle.

  6. its not a bad idea putting it off for a year...ill give you 2 weeks max on a 125 then youll put in for your full test....go the whole hog and get an R1...it only goes as fast as you want it to...

    be  safe,be seen...and enjoy.
