Motorcycle,suzuki katana ,94 model just got it going, runs great but ..?

this suzuki ..It think it is a copy of a katana gscc, 94 model 4 cyl. 250 cc starts and runs great, won't start in any gear , I assume it's a safety thing, but when started in neutral and we try to put it into gear first or second it cuts out every time .. any ideas please.
