Question:

Motorcycle Catalytic Converter?

I own a mid-engine 1989 MR2. I recently cut off the old damaged catalytic converter and muffler. I want to run a pipe right down the middle and connect a Magnaflow dual tip oval muffler to it. I will have to make 2 bends to the pipe.

However, I do not have enough space for a normal car catalytic converter. There is not enough space. I want to weld on a motorcycle catalytic converter because of obvious emission reasons and because I want it to reduce the loudness of the muffler. Does anybody know if motorcycle catalytic converters reduce the loudness of the exhaust or does it do nothing really?

  1. Yes, current bikes have catalytic converters and have been using them for the last 2 or 3 years. The problem is they are usually incorporated in to the main part of the exhaust pipe itself. If you have to go through a visual emissions test it would be hard to prove you have a cat and not a straight piece of pipe. As the other person mentioned there are small performance cats out there.

  2. Motorcycles currently do not require or use catalytic converters.

Try searching the Summit Racing website for catalitic converter.  Filter by selecting universal.  You may want to also further filter by selecting pipe size.

There are many universal catalytic converters to choose from.  Some are as small as 10.5 inches long.
