Question:

Motorcycle Keys? Why no microchip?

Most cars beginning in the new millenium fit their keys with microchips that prevent the ignition from being started if a duplicate key is simply made without the proper programming from the dealer.

From what I have seen, most motorcycles are not like this. Lo-Jack is definitely a good way to recover a stolen bike, but I like to prevent the harm before it occurs. My school is not in a very good area and I plan to ride daily and I have night classes, so I would like other suggestions also to prevent bike theft before I buy one.

What SPORT bikes usually have programmed keys?

  1. Two companies make add-on RFID chip systems to disable the make if you're not around.... try Digital Guard Dawg and **** systems.

  2. My BMW K1200s has that. Harley's have that as well. That's all I know about.

  3. most bikes that are stolen have nothing to do with the thief having a key.

  4. This is a stupid idea.

It can cut down on theft but it should be an option on vehicles, not a standard item that we are stuck with. It should be something that the dealer can install or remove for a nominal fee.

Some people might like the added "security" but to me these chipped keys are just an excuse for the vehicle manufacturer to rip me off for $45 for a spare key that used to cost $2.50!

  5. because 2 big dudes can just put it in a truck & be gone in 60 seconds,

  6. i like the option of being able to run a bike without a key at all... if it gets stolen, it's my loss... that's what insurance is for.  chipped keys just drives up prices of keys and is one more thing that can go wrong on a bike
