I'm interested in getting a scooter to cruise around town on....I know some don't require a motorcycle license to do so. What is the limit (or max) cc allowed to use your regular driver's license??

  1. I think if you will look into it a little father you will find that used to be true but dont think it is any more.

  2. There are two types of motorcycle licenses in Illinois.

    "L" class - anything 150cc and under

    "M" class - 151cc and over

  3. M class is required for anything 151 cc's and up.

L class is required for anything 50 cc's and up.

There are scooters that are under 50 cc's (Honda Metropolitan/ Ruckus, Yamaha Vino/ Zuma, etc). These can be classified as "Motorized Pedalcycles" aka Mopeds. Mopeds don't require a special license beyond your regular DL. But if they go over 30 MPH, they're _technically_ motorcycles requiring the "L" class. (I don't know any police officers that would write you a ticket for not having a L class license on a 49CC scooter though.)

If you only need to go 30-35 MPH max, you could get a 50CC scoot. If you need to get up to 45 or more, you'll want a larger engine. Have fun riding!

  4. thats easy its 49cc and under. Most so called 50 cc scooters will be technicaly 49 so you should be ok. someone has been trying to get all scooters set to be with a special license. but asof yet nothing, but to be safe check with your local motor veh branch or DMV for true facts. good luck on you scooter and ride safe.
