I wrote my test one day and got my license the next day.

Depends on where you are.

In Texas you simply get the permit and a motorcycle safety course then go get the license.

In Illinois you need to take a written test and a riding test.  Although it is possible to do it all in one day, it's not practical.  

Assuming you are not an experienced rider, you would take the written test first, followed by a short riding course provided by third parties in Illinois.  They will arrange for you to take the riding test and provide a bike.  DO NOT show up with your bike to take the riding test -- automatic failure and an ticket for operating without a license.

After that, it's just a wait in the Secretary of State's office to process the paperwork.

I was a complete beginner and without missing work was able to have my license in 10 days.
