Question:

Motorcycle helmet laws...good or bad? Do you wear or not?

I ride; have for many years. I wear a full-face helmet because I know what the road can do to your head and brain. I have been down at highway speed and wore the paint off my Bell Star XL but not the side of my head. I know that a huge percentage of critical motorcycle accident injuries brought to local hospitals are due to a neighboring state's "no helmet" law. My state requires them. How do you feel about insurance and such for those who choose not to wear a helmet?

  1. I think there great I wear mine all the time. Especially after I watched them scrap my Friends brain off the highway with a shovel.

  2. Pat B.    Why shouldn't their insurance rates increase if they choose not to wear a helmet?    It can be proven that helmets lessen the likelihood of severe head injury,   so if they choose to take that chance why shouldn't they pay to cover the extra risk?     Pretty much the same idea that smoker's cost more to provide health insurance to due to the extra problems that smoking causes.

  3. I do not support mandatory helmet laws for adults. Children, teems, yes. Adults should be able to decide for themselves. Same thing with seatbelts. And yes, I do wear a helmet when I ride and my seatbelt when I drive - by choice.

  4. I ride a harley and wear a full face helmet every time I get on and take a ride you never know when you might go down in a curve do to loose gravel on the road or have someone pull out in front of you ,and I don't feel insurance company's should cover you if you don't wear the safety equipment needed to ride

  5. If someone chooses not to wear a helmet its their call and i don't think that their insurance should increase. I could understand that if you are speeding and get cought your insurance goes up because you are endangering someone else's life but if you are not wearing a helmet and you go down you're hurting no one but your self. Not wearing a helmet in my opinion is retarded and idiotic.

  6. I used to live in one of those few states that allows adults to ride with no helmet.  I did it a few times, just to remind myself of how it feels, and mostly it felt uncomfortable.  Kind of like driving in a car with no seat belts... I guess I've been around long enough to be comfortable wearing all the proper safety equipment, and I don't need to prove how macho I am by riding without it.

  7. Not wearing a helmet is stupid. Ive seen what happens to someone not wearing a helmet and its def not pretty.

  8. It doesnt even have to be the riders fault for an accident and because you cant predict what others do how could you not wear a helmet.  on the open road no one around you can still have a blow out or a rabbit and thats all it takes.  to bad their isnt just 1 law that says helmets always everywhere.

  9. I wear a helmet (full face and open face).  Should it be mandatory...no, choice is good.  Should insurance costs be higher for non-helmeted riders?  I don't know, but ask yourself this...should it also be higher for those who don't wear armor?  How about those who don't wear longsleeves or long pants or over the ankle boots or gloves?  Look at this way, you and I think wearing a helmet is no big deal and makes our love of riding safer, but some think motorcycles (along with dirtbikes, ATVS, etc.) should be outlawed.  When you compare the safety of a bike to a car...well it's no contest.  I want to ride for the rest of my life because I choose to and I don't want that choice taken away.  In that sense, I understand where some of the no helmet guys come from.  I don't agree with them, because any 2 bit nutjob (that includes you cellphone talkers) can cause an accident and kill one of us.  But how many people out there would like to see motorcycles taken off the street altogether.  In some cases, we got to agree to disagree and stick together.  Do I like paying for it (thru insurance and taxes)...no.  But I don't like paying to rebuild people's homes in floodplains, hurricane land, tornado alley, or healthcare costs for smokers or unhealthy eaters either.  It sucks, and if you can figure out how to fix it...well I vote for you for president.

  10. First off I call riders with no helmets organ donors.  Insurance should require them to wear helmets or risk not being covered in an accident.

  11. Truthfully I don't wear one everytime I ride. Maybe 80% of the time...yes...the other 20%...no. I have all three types though...full, 3/4, and half helmet. Your question implies you'd like to see insurance higher for people that don't wear helmets. I disagree. Life's a gamble...we're betting we will have an accident and the insurance company is betting we won't. Insurance companies' profits suggest they are holding the winning hand. Will an insurance company lower your premium because you wear a helmet and raise mine because I don't sometimes? You and I both know that isn't going to happen.

  12. Head injury is the leading cause of death in motorcycle accidents.

  13. I ride a Harley and wear a full face helmet because there are two types of riders:  those who have been down and those that will go down.

  14. it's really secure to have ride with a helmet and for those who do no prefer it,kills
