Motorcycle license...Why do you need driver's license?

Or at least go through all the steps for a driver's license? I'm a teen and live in California. I'm not yet 18 and here are the requirements:

Submit proof that you have completed both driver's education and driver's training. (http://www.dmv.org/ca-california/motorcycle-license.php)

I know I know. I'll just have to bite the bullet and go through all the driving but I just want a motorcycle license not a driver's license. At with driver's ed and driver's training it'll all be car related and I just want to be able to drive a scooter (WAY cheaper on a student budget. I live near San Fran which 4.60 a gallon!).

Anyways, I'm just wondering why one has to go through the steps for a driver's license when I don't want one. Driver's ed it fne but I don't get driver's training...Or at least driver's training in a car...

  1. Driver Ed and Driver Training programs teach you not only how to operate a car but Rules of the Road, safety, how to interact with other traffic, your legal obligations as a driver, and a lot more.  You need to know same things for riding a motorcycle as for driving a car.

When you go to motorcycle school you will learn how to operate a motorcycle, how to avoid potentially dangerous situations, how make emergency stops and some other important skills.  This is not the same content as driver ed but is supplemental to that training for developing the knowledge and skill to operate any motor vehicle, 2 wheels or 4.

  2. A motorcycle or scooter is different from a car. There is a whole new set of skills and dangers that you must face. By requiring a license, they make sure you know what to do.

  3. Riding a motorcycle is a motor vehicle.  And where I live you have to take a motorcycle test also.  You don't know everything there is to know about driving or the rules, you just think you do.

  4. I can't tell you why, but you must fitdt pass and obtain a regular driver;s liscense, then get a motocycle learners permit. When you feel you;re ready you'll have to go to the  BMV and schedule a motorcycle  written and riding test, if you pass both you will get a motorcycle endorsement on your driver's liscense.Big hassle, but that's how it works, in Ohio at least.
