Question:

Motorcycle license???

I've passed the written test and now I got a permit. It says that if I'm under 21 and I want to take the skills test I must present a motorcycle training completion certificate. Where can I go to do this? How much does it cost??

I am 20 years old, do I have to do this in order to get my motorcycle license or can I just go to the DMV and make an appointment for my skills test?? Will DMV allow me to take the skills test without the certificate??

I live in Los Angeles, California

  1. You can make an appointment with your local DMV to take a skills test for your license.

You can also do a search of your local area for riding schools.  Some of these schools will take you through the basics of riding and safety and at the end of the course you get a certificate you can present to the DMV to show you passed a skills course to apply towards a license.

Some of these courses can take 1 or 2 days on a weekend.  You might be able to go to your local bike shop and ask the reps there of any of these schools in your area.  There should be at least 1 or 2.  They usually meet in a large open parking lot and lay out cones and instructors take on about a dozen or more students at a time.

Some courses may have only one fail factor and that's if you drop your bike.  As long as you keep your bike upright you will usually pass but this depends on the company that is giving the course.

  2. If they say you need a class what makes you think they are just joking?

Call up the DMV and ask them if they are serious!

No, call up and ask if there are classes near you that are acceptable for the training requirement.  The MSF gives you a certificate of completion, you need it to get your insurance discount.

  3. the class you need to take is provided by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF)    http://www.ca-msp.org/

it's not expensive and it does give you some useful information.  Couldn't hurt if you're going to ride on the streets of L.A. (as i do).

If you can pass the DMV skills test then you don't need to take the MSF class.  Not sure about the under 21 thing though.  I'd check the DMV web site.

In either case, the MSF class is not a bad idea for a new or experienced rider.
