  1. Go for it usually a regular driver liscence for a moped that is 50cc or less and a automatic. For motorcycle youll need a motorcycle liscense. Check with local and state laws they can differ sometime. Also buy depending on usage a moped and motorcycle dont necceasarily have adequate storage space so you may want to look at a godd 250cc scooter with underseat storage.

  2. Don't get me wrong. I love, own and ride motorcycles.

But motorcycles ,in this country, are a luxury.

You also need to have some degree of mechanical knowledge, or you'll get ripped off, and/or become unhappy quickly with the maintenance schedule.

Most motorcycles in the US market are , proportionately, more expensive and less fuel efficient than a car.

Yes, a bike is cheaper than a car, and uses less fuel, but not in proportion to how small it is.

A ride-able used bike will be at least $1500, for garbage. You can buy three or four drivable (garbage) cars for that money. I drove a $75 car for six months once. A $75 bike wouldn't last six minutes. AND they take forever to get repaired.

As for mileage, you'll average between 35 and 45 miles-per gallon on the "average" bike.

You'll  get to where you are going much faster, with more fun. Unless it's raining. But you'll have to make several trips, if you're doing a great deal of shopping.

Mopeds are just dumb. They are a novelty for city people, really. They are not cheap enough, compared to a motorcycle, and therefore not worth the gasoline savings. Unless you don't mind traveling at a snail's pace.

  3. What are you riding to get that sort of MPG? I have Speed Four and TDM900, and get 40-50mpg when I'm riding spiritedly I know I can get nearly 80mpg on the TDM. Smaller bikes are even better a honda CG should get at least 100mpg.

I would agree that they are not as cheap as you think, factor in you will need to get gear and if you plan on riding all year round you will need summer and winter gear. Bike need servicing fairly often too 4-6k miles. If you buy a 125/250 from a j*p make especially honda if should be bullet proof providing it is looked after.
