Question:

Motorcycle permit question?

I already have my motorcycle permit but I don't understand the rules. I live in Pennsylvania and PennDOT did not give me any further instructions. I've seen that in a few states that you have to ride during daylight with a licensed rider 21 or over in sight. I also saw that you cannot ride out of the county you received your permit in. Are these all true?

I was planning on taking the Safety course but my permit was issued in Berks county and I'm currently living in Pittsburgh... all the way across the state!! Suddenly I could be doing something illegal...

  1. Your motorcycle learner's permit is valid for one year and allows you to practice riding between sunrise and sunset provided you're accompanied by another person licensed to operate a motorcycle.

i dont see it saying you can not ride anywhere IN THE STATE.

  2. Below are the only restrictions I am aware of for a motorcycle permit in the state of Pennsylvania if you already have a valid C class license (for a car):

    1. Cannot carry a passenger

    2. Must ride between sunrise and sunset

You do not need a licensed rider 21 or over in sight and you can ride anywhere in the state.

  3. i rode for years on a permit when i lived in PA, got stopped for speeding and other offenses (even at night and never had an inspection sticker on the bike), the permit was never an issue. i don't recommend doing that but just pointing out that the police generally do not go after motorcycles with any kind of zeal. you may have the odd cop here and there but my  20+ yrs of riding i've never been looked at closely by the police.
