  1. Get it renewed.

I had heard something about limiting how many times a permit can be renewed, but as far as I can find, it hasn't taken effect.

Don't ride without! Especially to the DMV! A new permit is way cheaper than a ticket.

Rode without, got a ticket. Got a permit, then a license.

Tickets cost even more now, all these years later.

And no matter what they tell you, it does stay on your record.

  2. In NJ you get a 2 month permit (if I remember correctly) and you can renew it as many times as you want.

I'm sure they would have no problem with you renewing it seeing as you are doing the right thing.  You didn't feel confident enough in your skills to take the test yet, but you feel that you could get to be a strong enough rider after another 30 days.

In my humble opinion, if there is a safe riders' course in your area, take it.  It's fun and even if you've put thousands of miles behind you, you will still learn a thing or two...

and get an easy way out of taking the road test on your personal bike (mine is a 1100cc bike and I took the test on a 200cc bike the class provided... much easier)
