Question:

Motorcycle question (for a new guy)?

I am in the process of wanting to buy a Motorcycle. I need some basic information.

1) I will want to ride this bike with my wife. Will a 750cc range be sufficient enough for 2 people? Would a 750cc do well on the interstate with 2 people? For that matter, would a 750 do well on the interstate for one person?

2) If I only really planned on driving it around town (and the occasional interstate trip) what is the ideal CC's?

Any help would be very appreciative!

  1. no, the 750 cc cruiser will be a bad choice to ride a passenger

I would suggest either the Yamaha 1100 Silverado, or the 1300 V Star Tourer, or the Honda VTX1300

If you want a sport bike I would suggest the Suzuki V Strom 1000, or the Yamaha FJR 1300, or the Honda ST1300

please note: a 750 cc cruiser will work riding a passenger for short trips, short distance, but on longer trips it will be too uncomfortable for both rider and passenger

  2. I would suggest you look at  a Hyosung GV650 it will carry two real nice we do it all the time. Even on high way anything over 650 cc is wasted. If you really want bigger then go with a Harley you might as well be comfortable and cruise.                Go to www.prideinwhatyouride.com there are a group of owners that ride the GVand others from all over the world and you will get the straight story.

  3. As most have said a 750cc sportbike or tourer is fine, but if your going cruiser you want the bigger ones for 2 up riding. i had a 750cc cruiser a while back and it was a slug with just me on it on the freeway, around town was fine, but at highway speeds im at wide open throttle and if i needed to do an evasive manuever i wouldnt have anything left for speed. on a cruiser you really have nothing to fear from the bigger bikes, sportbikes can get scary if you dont know what your doing, but i learned how to ride on a gsxr1000 with the mentality that if i could learn on that i can ride anything, and it was true.

  4. Unless you're both real porkers,

    750 cc's is enough for a two-up tourer.

I've traveled cross-country on an old BMW  R75,

and those old bikes didn't make as much

power per cc as the new ones do.

You might want a bit more displacement if you live

in the mountains, but under 5000',  you'll be fine.

  5. 750 cc is a good all round capacity, but for 2 up riding most prefer 1000+. Also, there aren't a lot of sub 1000cc touring bikes.

Also depends on the bike: the available power is a factor as a sports bike has much more power than the same sized cruiser.

Other factor is weight: if one or both of you are 200lb plus you may need a bigger capacity to cruise comfortably 2 up.

  6. The 750 is excellent for your ideas. It is at the limit for 2 people on the freeway. A 550 is great for around town 2 up, and I'd say anything in the 400 range for local 2 up travel. Also, as  a beginner, you really need to be careful riding with a passenger until you've got some miles under your belt. You don't want to damage that precious cargo.

  7. The 750cc bike... I assume it is a cruiser style?.... will be MORE than sufficient. Realistically, even with 2up riding, a 600cc bike has more power than you will EVER need.

It all has to do with the power to weight ratio factor that makes motorcycles so fast.... less weight needs less power to move the vehicle around quickly, and 750cc, in any bike, is very ample.

As far as riding in town, I have a 900cc Ducati 900ss/cr/sp that I soley ride around town. Being a V-twin ( or more acurately, an L-twin) it has copius amounts of torque very low in the RPM range, and is therefore capable of accelerating VERY quickly, you just have to learn to baby the throttle while you are in town!

Good luck on the picking the bike!

  8. Some folks tour one-up on bikes half that size.  750 is plenty big, we've just become spoiled by the big bore contest that's been going on between the manufacturers.

  9. You forgot 2 important pieces of information:

    1. your height

    2. your weight

The bigger you are the bigger the bike you and your wife will need.

  10. A 750 is adequate for two people. It's also a good starter size.

It should do ok on the interstate two up, but for very long trips or touring you'll eventually want something bigger.

  11. interstate trips........ u should look into a touring bike instead... they are more comfortable, have plenty of cargo space and have a windshield to prevent drag....

a 750 will be overloaded if you are carrying a passenger and cargo for two
