Question

hi all bought a 125 sr yamaha from a neighbour it has been standing a while he managed to jump start it drove nice problem is he says needs new battery the lights horn indicators work but when starting it [electric start] it clicks so alls im asking is .is it or, could it be the battery i wont be able to get one till next week i dont want to buy one if that is not the problem,could it be the spark plug any advice would be great

cheapest thing to try - clean the battery leads, especially where the battery earth lead joins the motorcycle frame.  This is often a place where you get corrosion, so clean it well.

take the battery off the bike and charge it slowly, using a motorcycle battery charger not a car one, or at least one with a low charging rate, not a full 4 amps or you will cook the battery.

if he jump started it the spark plug is probably ok

The clicking sounds like a low or dead battery, does the same with a car, go ahead and buy it probably need one anyhow since it's been sitting that long.

If it has been sitting for a while, the first thing I would point to is the battery, especially if you can bump it. Pull the battery and take it to Autozone. They might not have a listing for that specific bike, but you can match one up to your old battery. That will cost about half of what you will pay going to a dealer.

It's probably the battery if its been standing a long time. It's probably got enough life to power the lights etc but it needs a lot more juice to turn the starter motor. It could also be a knackered starter relay but battery is more likely. Either way, it's an easy fix and a common enough bike that you'll get a relay on Ebay or a breakers if you need one. If you've heard the bike running then it isn't the spark plug. A battery is the place to start anyway.

Buy yourself a manual and give the bike a good going over as soon as you can. New plugs, oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter, drain the old petrol from the tank and carbs etc.

The battery is more than likey sulphated from sitting.If you have a low amperage charger you could try charging it for a few days.A 1 -3 amp charger would be best.Sometimes if it hasn't been too long a battery will come back to life.The spark plug is probably fine.Since it has been sitting getting a can of Sea Foam at the parts store and adding some to the gas tank wouldn't hurt either.And check the tire sidewalls for cracking from sitting.

From what you have said it does sound likely that it is the battery that is the problem. Being an electric start it takes a lot of 'effort' on the batteries part to start the whole machine up. Because it was jump started the battery probably has enough power in it to make the indicators work etc but not enough to start it up.

  

  It might be worth fully charging the battery first and then trying again as if a bike is left standing for a long period of time without it being used the charge can drain from the battery and all it needs is to be fully charged.
