Question:

Motorcycling in Houston safely...

I am buying my first 150cc scooter (top speed 60mph) this upcoming weekend.

Some people have posed "horror stories" about how every motorcyclist will likely break at least one bone no matter how careful they are through things like being rear-ended or side-swiped by a car who does not see them, getting their tires caught in a groove on the road, and slipping in rain.

I am wondering where the best (smoothest/least traffic) roads are to travel on with my new scooter, safest times to travel on each road, and a few extra safety precautions that can help. I am planning to travel within the area between Reliant park and The Marquee shopping center.

------------

I AM taking an MSF course on Friday and Saturday...but I also realize the best I can do is avoid areas where dangerous situations often occur altogether.

  1. Do yourself a favor and don't ride a 150cc bike in Houston traffic. You'll get run over. Be careful.

  2. congrats! i would suggest that you buy a low cc motorcycle than a scooter though, for safety issues so u can speed away from a almost wreck or something. Houston has horrible drivers, and they hate motorcycles even more. im glad yoru taking the msf course, its alot of fun. saves you the hassle of the riding part of the test as well. but please check into www.honda.com and look up the Rebel Motorcycle. its 250cc and is really cool for a starter. or if you like sport style, try www.kawasaki.com and try finding a ninja 250. the honda though, is very cheap and reliable, and lots of fun. stay safe

  3. Dude I live on the North side, but I work in the Galleria.  I don't ride down there, I drive, but the south loop by 288 has a rough road surface.  Also, that is an area that is usually really busy.  I wouldn't want to ride fast in general, but if 60 mph is your top, you stand a pretty good chance of getting run over even in the slow lane.  have you considered a 250cc?  I have a friend who rides one, it goes pretty well (he hasn't topped it out, because he promised his wife so he could get it.  Whipped.)

When will you be riding?  I would say off peak times would be best.  Also, you should think about getting the protective clothing.
