Question:

Motorized bicycle help?

I have researched this for a while now, and I have some parts, I have a homelite chainsaw engine, a bike with a flat support above the back tire (to mount the engine). The bike has front brakes. I want this to be very simple. I want my bike to be motorized and be one speed, since I dont want to spend the money to buy a clutch that varies in speeds. I am hoping to use the chain and sprocket off the bicycle and attach a sprocket to the crankshaft on the chainsaw engine. I will use a separate bike brake for the throttle, giving me 3 brakes total. To stop, my idea is to just lay off the throttle, and use the original bike brakes. Is there anything that may be an issue for this? Thank you.

  1. You are going to need a mechanism to keep tension on the chain- maybe modifying a rear derailer. and a way to adjust it for alignment.  Since you are going with one speed, maybe use a rear hub that has a foot brake in it that will replace the rear brake lever and will free up some handlebar space.  Using a small metal container possibly in a saddle bag  mounted higher than the engine will gravity feed the fuel without a pump.  It will need to be vented.
