Every year at the end of June or in the beginning of the July the Goodwood Festival of Speed is showcased in the enchanting grounds of Goodwood House, West Sussex, England. The present Earl of March set the foundation of the event in order to bring the love of motor racing back to Goodwood estate. The first event was hosted on the grounds of his own house because initially he did not have the permit to hold the event. Later it turned into a tradition that has continued for more than a decade.
Goodwood House is one of the most splendidly built houses, famous for its class, elegance and the beautiful natural scenery that it offers. It is a country house in West Sussex, England which is actually the seat of the Dukes of Richmond. The design of the house has been masterly made with the joint effort of several architects with an intention to build a unique octagonal layout. However, only three of the eight sides were completed but still one cannot stop dropping ones jaw with awe and admiration of the place. The area surrounding the Goodwood Estate has served as a major sport and leisure venue for a long time now.
The first event proved to be a big success as it was able to attract more than thirty thousand people, despite the clash of date with the 24 Hours of Le Mans that year. Since then the event has been able to attract several tens of thousands of people each year to behold the mega event that spreads over three days. The record making year for the event was 2003, when 158,000 people assembled to grace the occasion. However, since its inaugural event it has been carefully observed that the dates must not clash with any other racing event.
Over the years this event has become one of the most important events of the English Social Season. It marks the presence of all the world’s most celebrated and historic cars and bikes that range from over 100 years to present. There is always a large number of retired drivers as well as there are drivers from various present day series.
The biggest attraction for a lot of people are the unguarded paddocks which welcome a large number of fans who come hunting for autographs and photos as well as to touch and regard the history making cars closely.
The splendid lawns of the house have always been successful in fascinating and charming the attendees. The aesthetically and innovative entrances of the grounds have been able to claim the 'Style et Luxe' design award as well. Besides the superb uphill drive displayed by bikes and cars, this civilised picnic place also entertains people with numerous food stalls as well as the special Green's Restaurant serving the finest and most delicious seafood and champagne of the world.
Hence, it is no doubt one of the most exciting events of the motor racing world. The English people have a double treat this year as the Goodwood’s festival week would be followed by the British Grand Prix next weekend and it is hoped that both the events will be celebrated with the zeal and zest.
