Question:

Motorway tips for new driver?

I've only passed my test for a bit over a month and I am going onto the motorway (via M25) for the first time to Thorpe Park, with a group of friends, none of whom drive themselves. I've been on high speeds for short amounts of time on A roads but never on a real motorway for a long stretch of time and I have been known to get quite overwhelmed and nervous if I don't know routes well, especially at high speeds when people in the car are talking etc. I was wondering if anybody had any general tips for motorway driving for me (please keep it relevant to England)- I just want to get there and back safely!

Thank you in advance for any input :]

  1. Take your time, remember 70 mph is the maximum speed not the speed you have to travel at. Always allow yourself plenty of stopping distance from the car in front. Don,t hog the middle lane, keep your window open slightly to get fresh air into the car to keep you alert.Keep looking at the signs and give youself plenty of time to get into the nearside lane when you need to exit the motorway.Remember when overtaking that the vehicles in the rearview mirror can be approaching a lot faster than you think.
