Motu Tony extends his stay with Wakefield Trinity Wildcats - Rugby League
Motu Tony, full-back for the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, has inked a new deal with his franchise that will extend his stay for the second year in a row, on August 9th. This deal may also extend further into his third year with Wildcats if both parties agree.
In October 2010, the Wildcats had announced Tony’s inclusion for the ongoing 2011 season but he could not play in many games due to a hand injury in the initial half of the season. He made his debut for the Wildcats, on June 12, against Huddersfield where
they emerged victorious in a tight clash of 13-10.
The 30-year-old kiwi fullback has also played for Hull FC, Whitehaven, Brisbane Broncos, New Zealand (NZ) Warriors and Castleford Tigers before he joined the Wildcats in 2011. His prior experience is studded with many big games, which include 55 games for
NZ Warriors, the club with which he made his debut in 2001. He was also part of the Warriors’ outfit in the 2002 National Rugby League (NRL) final showdown.
While talking about Tony’s reason of lesser participation this season, Andrew Glover, the chairman of the franchise stated, “After an unfortunate injury at the beginning of the season Motu hasn’t been able to play as many games as we’d have hoped this year.
Now back to full fitness I am confident the best is yet to come from him. I’m very pleased that we have kept hold of Motu for another year and with the option of a contract extension I’m confident that we will see some top class Rugby League from this player.”
Glover acknowledged Tony’s potential as a brilliant rugby league player and added that his inclusion within the squad will benefit all, as he has the experience of big games with his previous franchises that will be a source of guidance for the younger lot
within the squad.
Tony has also played for the alternate code of rugby, to represent Hull, the rugby union club. Also, he has the title of Gillet Tri-nations 2005 under his belt, in which the Australian squad lost in an embarrassing defeat of 0-24. His career profile is also
studded with the Challenge Cup title in 2005.
Tony is pleased with the latest development within the squad and thanked Glover for the opportunity of playing for Wakefield in 2012 too. He said that he has enjoyed his one year long stay with Wakefield and is eager about working hard with them for their
next season lined up.
This kiwi veteran boasts a vast experience of being part of the big games in the world of rugby that explains why he has been retained from the upcoming season, as his valuable experience has a lot to offer to the Wildcats.
