I've mould growing on my bedroom ceiling and bathroom wall. This is a rented place. Our room does not get any sunlight as it is blocked by two big trees. It is therefore cold in our room so that we seldom open the windows. The bathroom does not has fan and we always open the window when we shower. But the mould still grows.

I am not sure if this is the owner's responsibility to clear them up or we are expected to clean it. The ceiling is high and it is hard to clean as it is just up above our bed. Can anyone let me know what should i do ?

Thanks

  1. Mould is a real health hazard.Shading from the trees doesn't allow for the the house to dry out properly. Its the responsibility of the owner to rectify it. Contact your real estate agent or owner whoever you rented it from to rectify it

  2. I had this same problem in a farm house I once lived in. Although it may be an arduous task, give it a good washing with a strong chlorine bleach solution & it shouldn't re-appear. Our problem was caued by the previous occupant who blocked all the air vents to prevent mice entering the house in a mouse plague in NSW some years before. The walls need to 'breathe'.

  3. Realize that you are only renting. A good and cheap way to clean it up is to use warm water and bleach. Figure  a half cup  ( 4 ounces) to a gallon of water. And wipe down the mold with a sponge. That should kill the mold instantly and bleach out the ugly color it leaves behind.

I could go on about the causes etc but it is the landlords property and his responsibility.

If it comes to the point you are disgusted with it then the first chance you get --move.

It is very possible the mold will return so just use the bleach treatment again.

  4. I am a landlord and it sounds as if there is a problem that is at least partially the landlord's responsibility (no fan in bathroom).  If it were just the bedroom and it is because you are not opening the windows this could be different. You have been given advice about how to deal with that aspect of the problem. Some people have advised you to use chlorine based bleaches.  There have been a lot of health warnings about the dangers of chlorine bleaches and not just damage to your lungs. It sounds as though the level of mould is such that you should try to get the agents to have a professional with protective gear to do the initial mould treatment at the landlord's expense and urgently. Mould itself is a health hazard.  You could google safe mould removal.

  5. Sounds like a condensation problem, and or roof leak around the vent stacks .This is your landlords responsibility.

He/She knows that molds can be dangerous, and fatal in some cases. If nothing is done soon.Contact your local Health Dept. and complain.

  6. contact the estate agent/renter & ask if this a old problem on the properety if they say no & you think it is contact  rental athurity mob for NSW & ask what yopu can do
