Mount Athos in top form for the Melbourne Cup
The five-year-old bay gelding, Mount Athos, has become popular from favourite for the 2012 Melbourne Cup. According to Paddy Power, he has come down to 10 to 1 for the Group 1 from 12 to 1, the previously quoted odds.
BetVictor spokesman Charlie McCann said: "There is a very strong European challenge with Godolphin's challenge, seemingly, headed by Ascot Gold Cup winner Colour Vision (8st9lb), although both Cavalryman (8st7lb) and Ebor winner Willing Foe (8st4lb) would have their supporters although the latter may struggle to make the cut".
"Americain and Dunaden head the weights and only two horses have carried 58kg or more in the last 40 years - they look to face difficult tasks as they bid to follow up."
The connections were already proud and confident about the performance and grace of their under charge. The Irish bay gelding is unbeaten in the 2012 season, two handicaps and a grade 3 success.
Mount Athos cracked open the season with the Cheap Broadband @ Poptelecom.co.uk Handicap on 19th May, 2012 at Newmarket over a mile and six furlongs.
The favourite entry of Luca Cumani raced in the capable hands of the jockey, Jamie Spencer. He defeated Harlestone Times by 2 ¼ lengths.
The five-year-old then landed the John Smith’s Silver Cup (Handicap) (Listed Race) on 14th July, 2012 at York over a mile and six furlongs. Riding with jockey, Kieren Fallon, the Dr. Marwan Koukash owned landed the race by the margin of four lengths.
Finishing the closest to the inner was, High Jinx.
The most significant and influential success of the five-year-old was in the Group 3 Betfred “The Bonus King” Geoffrey Stakes on 18th August, 2012 at Newbury over a mile and 5 ½ lengths. The favourite entry became the mount for the jockey, Ryan Moore, and defeated the 2011 St Leger contender, Brown Panther, by 3 ¼ lengths.
The Irish bay gelding has raced at three different destinations and that also with three different jockeys. Another challenge is such top form will be nothing out of the routine for the racing icon who is a lethal threat for all the other contenders of the 2012 Melbourne Cup.
