Mount Athos likely to appear in Goodwood Cup – Horseracing news
Mount Athos seems to be headed for a showdown in the Artemis Goodwood Cup (British Champions Series) (Group 2) in England.
Trainer Luca Cumani updated the future plans of his challenger on his website. The statement read, “It was originally the idea that he would run next in the Geoffrey Freer at Newbury but we are steering now more towards the Goodwood Cup for the reason that
the staying division isn't strong right now and of all the staying Cup races the one at Goodwood places least emphasis on stamina.”
There are some really good runners lined up for action at Goodwood and they will be looking to make a strong impression for their respective camps. It will be interesting to see who earns the maximum number of bets in the class-1 encounter.
Mount Athos has got plenty of experience and he has appeared in some important competitions since making his debut in 2009. He was not really consistent at the start of his career and it appeared that he did not have the quality to match his rivals at the
highest level of the sport.
However, he has improved his performances over the years and looks very relaxed now, especially when he goes into some important races.
Overall, the six-year-old gelding has participated in a total of 24 events, winning eight of them. His strike rate is not on the higher side, but he is still seen as a major threat to his rivals.
At Goodwood, Mount Athos will be up against some quality stallions and will have to work hard to perform well against them. One of those runners will be Saddler’s Rock, who can cause plenty of problems for his opponents.
His trainer John Oxx said, “He didn't run well at Ascot. He was flat there but seems back in form so we're hopeful he can put up a good show at Goodwood. I expect he'll get the ground he likes.”
This year has not been a very good one for Saddler’s Rock, as he has been unable to finish strongly even once. He might like the conditions at Goodwood though, which could bring some good fortune for him.
