Mount Athos looking to accomplish great things after a victory in the Cheap Broadband @ Poptelecom.co.uk Handicap
Mount Athos’s owner, Dr. Marwan Koukash made his first trip to Newmarket to support his runner, and it was all worth it, as the five-year-old gelding smashed through the Cheap Broadband @ Poptelecom.co.uk Handicap on 19th May,
2012.
The son of Montjeu, out of Ionian Sea, was mounted by rider Jamie Spencer, and the duo worked well together in an extremely grand fashion.
He used his winning odds well as he was declared a 9-2 favourite, and defeated the John Dunlop trained, Harlestone, Times by 2 ¼ lengths.
The third place was secured by Hurricane Higgins, who missed the runner-up finish by a nose.
This was the fifth victory for the bay gelding, who is currently under the training of Luca Cumani as he was trained by David Wachman until 18th April, 2012.
He previously scored in the www.dundalkstadium.com Handicap at Dundalk in April, 2011, where he was guided to victory by rider, W.M. Lordan, over Dreamy Gent, by 2 lengths.
On 20th August, 2010, Mount Athos raced as a collective favourite with rider, Franny Norton, on his back and he managed to succeed by half-length over, Tactician in the Sky Bet Melrose Stakes (Handicap) at York.
With this success safely tucked under his belt, he is likely to compete in the big races to come, where he can demonstrate his strength.
The owner stated to the press that:
"The long-term aim is the Melbourne Cup. I will leave it to Mr Cumani to plot the best route - he is the expert in that area."
Jockey Jamie Spencer had quite an eventful evening as well, as he managed to score in the poptelecom.co.uk Maiden Stakes (Div I), where he led the Roger Charlton trained, Captain Cat, to 4 ½ lengths victory over, Lahaag, whereas Trend Is My Friend
finished in third place.
Captain Cat, son of Dylan Thomas, out of mare Mother Of Pearl, is still young but seems to have an immense degree of talent. Out of his three starts, he has a victory and he secured a finish in third in April, 2012
