  1. It is on the island of Martinique, in the Caribbean.  It erupted in 1902 and sent a pyroclastic flow directly down over the capital city of Saint-Pierre, killing all but 2 of the 32,000 people there when it erupted..

The only survivors were a prisoner in an underground jail, with only a small slit window pointing toward the sea (away from the volcano); and a little girl who saw the lava welling up in a small rift as she was going up the mountain.  She escaped by running down to the shore and taking a boat out to sea before the eruption.  I have since read articles that disputed the story of the girl, and the prisoner thereafter billed himself as the only survivor of the Mt. Pelee eruption.  Mount Pelee is still an active volcano.
