Mountain Bike tires and pressures?

Question

Im a keen mountain biker looking to start competing, and im using Specialized tires now, but what would be the ample tire make/model and ample PSI for a) hard solid dirt terrain, and b) soft, fairly boggy mud? Thanks in advance!

I was advised that 40PSI in the front and slightly less in the back is a good place to start but im no expert. I recomend you ask this question in the forum of a biking website such as www.pinkbike.com
