Mountaineers volleyball team falls to Davidson in five-set thriller by 3-2
The Appalachian State volleyball team, commonly referred to as the Mountaineers, turned heads around by creating a dead-lock of 2-2 but could not keep the momentum going in the final set of the match, which was held on Friday night in Boone, North Carolina.
Mountaineers trailed behind in the first two sets and it did not look good for the team but they made a great comeback and captured the next two sets. Nonetheless, the Davidson Wildcats snatched victory from the Mountaineers by winning the last set and recorded
a 3-2 (25-22, 25-21, 9-25, 18-25, 15-10) victory over Appalachian squad.
Davidson’s Caroline Brown posted a team-high 18 kills and also had 14 blocks in the match. Molly Crenshaw registered 27 digs, while Ariel Ley helped the team with 44 assists, 10 digs and four blocks. Tindall Sewell was credited with six blocks and seven
kills for Davidson. Christine Perzinski also added 8 kills and eleven digs. On Mountaineers’ side, Alison Blasingame and Meghann Forshey recorded a 21 and 18, respectively.
After winning this match, the Davidson improved to 15-11 overall, 5-8 in the league, while the Mountaineers dropped to 18-9 overall and 10-3 in the conference.
The match was opened a high-note as both sides exchanged long rallies and staged an intense fight. Wildcats came roaring in the first set and tried to put pressure on the rival side with good combination of attack and defence tactics. Quite similarly, the
Mountaineers looked ready to take the challenge. They received the powerful shots with firm hands and saved many crucial points. The two teams frequently traded lead and tied the score for 13 times in opening set. It was tough to make a judgement about the
potential outcome but Wildcats made it quite evident with 25-22 win.
Taking full advantage of the first-set victory, the visiting Wildcats made a great opening in the second set. They carried the momentum and added quick points. On the other hand, Mountaineers tried to resist but could not stop the rising score of Wildcats.
Home team suffered the loss of another set as visitors posted 25-21 on board.
Apparently, there was tons of pressure on the Mountaineers set but they stunned the home audience with outstanding performance in third set. The head coach regrouped the players and gave them a new plan to break the rhythm of opponents. They suddenly come
out of blues and downed the Wildcats with huge margin in third set, 25-9.
Success in third set restored the confidence of home squad and enabled them to capture fourth set of the match. Mountaineers created the tie of 2-2 by claiming fourth set with the help of 25-18. They erased the 2-0 lead of Davidson to force a fifth set in
the match.
15-point golden set was full of suspense and anxiety. However, the visiting team proved to be better and defeated Mountaineers with 15-10 in final set, which led them to 3-2 victory.
