The final match of the Castle Logan Cup, between the bottom two teams, saw Mountaineers dominating the proceedings through the first three days, after posting a healthy 412 against Southern Rocks, who were enforced to bat again following their abysmal first inning showings – being bowled out on an embarrassing 145 at the Masvingo Sports Club, February 15, 2012.
Winning the toss and batting first, Mountaineers started their first innings slowly as they lost opener http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Cunningham-Ncube-c51781 on the team score of 7, after he was picked up by right-arm pacer Taurai Muzarabani.
Following the early dismissal, the hosts earned two more before the innings geared momentum through right-handed batsman, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mitchell-c76390, with the opener falling six runs short of a deserved century.
However, that did little to stem the flow of runs as Maruma and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Donald-Tiripano-c1393 (102*) then bettered the previous stand by adding 170 to help their side post a daunting 412. The skipper remained the top scorer with 143, which included 16 boundaries and two sixes.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bruce-Tembo-c1201 were also prominent with two wickets each.
Southern Rocks started off their first innings with the left-handed batsman, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kudzai-Maunze-c1816 taking guard, however; they faced a setback at the team score of 33 when pacer Donald Tiripano took the task of sending Maunze (9) and one-down batsman Bruce Tembo (0) back to the pavilion.
Following the successive blows, SR batsmen failed to establish a lasting partnership as the bowling side remained ruthless to restrict their opponents on a meagre score of 145. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Taurai-Muzarabani-c92904 was the top scorer for the visitors with 29 runs.
Tiripano and Natsai M’shangwe remained the most successful of the Mountaineers’ bowlers, bagging 3 wickets each.
SR’s first innings was soon followed by their second, after the Mountaineers enforced a follow-on. The openers, Masvaure and Maunze, made an improved start, adding 37 before Maunze (13), who was caught and bowled by pacer Tendai Chatara. At the end of the third day’s play, Southern Rocks posted 39, and trailed the opposition by 228 runs with 9 wickets in hand.
This is the last match of Castle Logan Cup 2011/12, which has been contested by 5 teams, each playing eight matches.
Tuskers have already topped the points table with 36, while Mountaineers are 4th with two wins, with the Rocks sitting at the bottom without a win. The result of this match will not affect the standing of the two teams, considering a 15- point gap separating them.
