  1. New Hampshire is a great state for hiking and sight seeing.  The white mountains have so many different places to visit and things to see.  But I think it would be even better to visit in the fall because of the leaves changing color.  Also, a drive to a big city would be about 3 hours to Boston.  But you could stay over night because there is SO much to do there as well.

  2. Reno, Nevada; Taos, New Mexico;

  3. Colorado Springs--lots of mountains and lots of shopping

  4. The answer depends on HOW mountainous you want.

Somewhat:  Park City, Utah or Heber, Utah

Also:  Brighton (plus:  has a lake, mountain flowers, my favorite)

--all of these near Salt Lake City

Moderately Mountainous:  Lots of places in Idaho and Oregon:  Just Google "Mountain Resorts [state name]"

You can also get real mountainous in both of those states if desired.  BTW, we have cougars here and also recommend traveling in group, with notice, and with necessary supplies.  Grizzly Bears a more remote possibility, ask at locale.  Minimum:  Bear Spray and Hatchet, stay with group.

Make noise going through woods.  Talk loudly, be watchful.

Wanting Big Mountains:  Several small cities in Colorado are located in the Rockies.  You would Go To Denver, first, probably.  Do not stand underneath mountain trees in lightning storm.

Google Colorado Mountain Resorts and pick one near a town, may have same name.

Advice:  Do not go to gambling resort.

Of these, I would go for UT as least risky while still very interesting

For Idaho as most possibilites for whatever you want, also reasonably safe.

Not much for lakes in Colorado.

Snake River:  Google that plus word 'Sightseeing.'

Sounds to me like Utah is best, but you may want to be more adventurous with sightseeing Snake River and/or Idaho mountains.

I really like Brighton, a little paradise in summertime.  Peaceful, colorful, resting, rejuvenating and NOT crowded!

Of course, ID and CO are big places.  Would absorb many visitors and still not be crowded.

In summer, NM and AZ are hot oh!  Temperature-wise.

California has drawbacks.  Could be crowded, could be dangerous, more costly, not as secluded, maybe not as restful.  Skunks and rattlesnakes more likely.

Salt Lake City has much help easy to find for assistance getting to Brighton.

You will need to rent a car.  Best to have 6-cylinders for trapsing along mountain roads.  Deal to rent 'by-the-week'  or by 'per day' possible.  Usually mileage charge additional and refill tank on return.

You may want to check that out ahead for the best deal.

Should be A BREEZE to do all this by computer.  Planning, maps with road routes, all.

Possibility:  Gold panning in some places.  Gold now $1000 per ounce.  No fun on vacation though, I would think.  But, who knows?  A brief stop on way back that might hit pay dirt?

P.S.  That is HARD work and really burns up time, may produce no result.

Utah the safest of all.  Do not leave valuables on display in car ANYWHERE nowadays.  Travelers Cheques best.  Credit Card needed to rent a car.  Friendliest and safest people in Utah, then Idaho, then Colorado. 911 for police, cell phone a must, works just about everywhere. You can get one cheap anywhere here for $20--40.  Still dials 911 when minutes used up.

  5. Try Denver, Colorado. It is a nice city and it is in the Rocky Mountains.
