Moustache fever hits Serengeti Golf Club
A magnificent South African Open finally came to a close when Henrik Stenson lifted the trophy at the Serengeti Golf Club. This tournament was a bug success on and off the field.
There were some brilliant performances by the players, especially by Stenson and George Coetzee.
Coetzee could not win the tournament but he will always remember his third round performance when he carded 63. His 63 was a course record at the Serengeti Golf and Country Club.
However, apart from that, one very interesting aspect came to light during the event. Over the course of four days Movember fever hit the South African Open.
Both the players and spectators were seen having contrasting Movembers. Movember is an initiative which was started by the Movember Foundation.
The foundation started its work a good eight years ago. The organisation aims to raise funds which, in return, will help in measures to fight cancer. Apart from that, the foundation also runs some awareness programs regarding cancer.
It was back in 2007 when the Movember Foundation started its work in South Africa and since then many people from all walks of life have supported this cause.
People in South Africa keep moustaches in the month of November. The interesting thing is that they are not just moustaches. In fact, there is a wide variety of moustaches which can be seen on the faces of players and spectators.
At this year’s South African Open, defending champion Hennie Otto led from the front, as he decided to let his beard and moustache go all wild during the four days.
“One of Louis’ (Oosthuizen) friends has got cancer, and I don’t want to do the moustache thing, because it looks ridiculous on me, so I do the beard thing with it. He asked me how long we’re going to do it for and I said the whole of November,” he said.
Fellow South African and European Tour winner Thomas Aiken also kept a moustache to support the Movember foundation.
“All my mates and I grow our moustaches for the month of November, along with the rest of Johannesburg. And whoever loses, donates the money to charity,” said Aiken.
